THE SUN IS A WOMAN

In Norse mythology the sun is not a thing, she is a person.

Sól, a goddess, drives the sun across the sky in a chariot pulled by two horses, Árvakr and Alsviðr.

Every day, without fail, without rest.

SHE IS NOT RACING. SHE IS FLEEING.

The old Norse had an answer for why the sun never stops, never slows, never lingers.

She is being hunted.

A giant wolf called Sköll, Old Norse for Mockery, for Treachery, chases her chariot across the sky every single day of her existence.

His brother Hati, Hate, hunts her brother, the moon. Born in the Ironwood, of the brood of Fenrir.

The sun rises fast and flees west, not because of physics. Because of fear.

THE BITE

To the Norse, an eclipse was the moment the chase nearly ended.

Sköll's jaws closing over the sun.

People would shout, bang shields, make all the noise in the world to frighten the wolf into letting go.

It always worked. So far.

THE PROPHECY

The Eddas say that one day it will not.

At Ragnarök, Sköll catches Sól and swallows her whole.

The sky goes dark. The stars vanish.

The end of the world begins.

THE SUN RETURNS

Before she is caught, Sól bears a daughter as bright as she is, who rides her mother's road across the sky of the world reborn.

The sun is always devoured. The sun always returns.

That is what an eclipse is. The wolf bites, the world holds its breath for 2 minutes and 18 seconds, and the sun escapes.

AUGUST 12, 2026

This is not any eclipse. The shadow's path is the wolf's hunting ground.

It crosses the Arctic, Greenland, then Iceland, the island where these myths were written down, then sweeps south to Iberia, where the longships raided.

And that same night, the Perseid meteor shower peaks. The sky will rain sparks from the wolf's jaws as he closes in.

On August 12 at 17:47 UTC, over the old Norse world, Sköll takes his bite.
